Important auDA notice regarding your domain/s

30 Aug 2022, by Slade Baylis

The Australian Domain Administrator (auDA) has requested that all accredited Registrars reach out to their domain registrants about important information about the upcoming Priority Allocation period ending on 20th September 2022.

We’ve sent out a direct email to our customers to notify them earlier, however, this may not have reached everyone. Micron21 is offering .au domains at cost price to help customers protect their brand from the 3C's: competitors, confusion and criminals. There is still time, but the opportunity is quickly running out to secure your .au matching domain.

auDA recently launched Australia’s newest domain namespace – .au Direct.

.au Direct domain names – like getyour.au - are shorter, simpler domain names and are available as a new option for Australian internet users. These new domain names are general purpose, meaning they’re open to anyone with a verified connection to Australia who wants to create or manage an online presence for themselves or their organisation.

If you hold a domain name in any other .au namespace (e.g. com.au, org.au, id.au etc.), created prior to 24 March 2022, you are able to apply for Priority Status to register its exact match in .au Direct.

For example if you hold forexample.com.au, you can apply to register forexample.au.

You need to act now if you want to register a matching domain in .au Direct

You have until 20 September to register a matching .au Direct domain name based on your existing domain name. This is because certain .au Direct domain names are being held for those who have an existing domain licence.

From 21 September anyone who meets the eligibility criteria under the .au Domain Administration Rules: Licensing will be able to apply for a .au Direct domain name, even if it is a direct match for your existing domain name.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) has recommended that all Australian businesses, organisations and individuals consider registering the .au direct equivalent as it could provide cybercriminals the opportunity to impersonate your business.

What do you need to do?

To register a .au Direct domain name that matches a current domain name you hold, you will need a Priority Token for your current domain name which you can retrieve here (https://priority.auda.org.au/).

You may then register your .au Direct name here: https://www.micron21.com/audirect

If you are the only person eligible to apply for the .au Direct name (because no other person holds the matching name in a separate namespace), you will be allocated the .au Direct domain name so long as you are eligible for it.

Where more than one person is eligible for an .au Direct name, the name will be allocated in accordance with the .au Domain Administration Rules: .au Direct Priority Implementation.
