For a lot of small businesses and sole traders, Shared Web Hosting (SWH) is where the journey begins. It's affordable, it's simple, and it gets you online without needing to know the first thing about servers – which is exactly why it's such a popular starting point. It's also something we've covered quite a bit in the past, as working out where you should begin and what those very first steps look like can be more than a little daunting when you're just starting out.
One thing we haven't touched on much though, is what happens next – that is to say, what is the next step once you've outgrown that initial shared web hosting service. And it's worth talking about, because outgrowing your hosting isn't a single thing that happens all at once. It can creep up on you in a few different ways. Sometimes it's space constraints, where your website, databases, and emails have simply grown beyond the storage you've been allocated. Other times it's the performance limits – the CPU, RAM, or disk I/O (the term for how quickly data can be read from and written to storage) that you're able to consume on a shared platform. And sometimes it's neither of those - instead it's the limitations on what you can and cannot install, whereby the software that your business now depends on is something that your shared environment is unable to accommodate.
That's why this month we thought we'd talk about what that next step actually looks like. Specifically, we'll be covering what moving up to your own dedicated Virtual Private Server (VPS) involves, what the migration process looks like, and what the ongoing managing and maintenance of that sort of service entails – all with the aim of helping you know whether it's the right move for where your business is at.
Shared Web Hosting (SWH) - as the name suggests - is a hosting service where many different customers share the resources of a single server. Your website sits alongside those of other businesses, all drawing from the same pool of CPU, memory, and storage. It's a model built around one core purpose – keeping costs low while still getting you reliably online.
For this reason, it makes for a fantastic entry point. You get a professional, functioning web presence without the upfront investment or the technical overhead that comes with running your own infrastructure. And importantly, it's a fully managed service. This means you don't need to worry about the things that would otherwise fall on your plate – server maintenance, backups, administration of the underlying server, monitoring, and all the rest. All of this is handled for you behind the scenes, leaving you free to focus on actually running your business.
However, there are naturally some things that you don't get with this type of service. Because the server is shared amongst many customers, you don't get administrator access to the entire service – you're only given control over your own little slice of it, but not the whole. Along the same lines, you also don't get full control over the types of software that can be installed on the server. If your business grows to the point where it needs a specific application, a particular version of a programming language that the hosting doesn’t come with, or a custom configuration that isn't supported on the shared platform, you'll find yourself bumping up against the walls of what shared hosting is able to offer. And that's usually the point at which people start looking at what comes next.
A Virtual Private Server – or VPS – is the natural next step. Rather than sharing a server with other customers, a VPS gives you a whole virtual server environment entirely for your own use. It's your own isolated slice of a physical machine, with resources dedicated to you, that behaves just like a standalone server would.
One of the biggest advantages of this is that it does away with the "noisy neighbour" problem. On shared hosting, if another customer on the same server suddenly starts consuming a large amount of resources – whether through a traffic spike, a poorly-behaved script, or otherwise – it can impact the performance of everyone else on that machine, yourself included. With a VPS, however, your resources are your own, so you are no longer at the mercy of what the customers around you happen to be doing!
Now, it's worth being upfront about how VPS servers are usually configured elsewhere in the industry. Typically, a VPS is a single virtual machine (VM) running on a single physical host, which means that there's limited redundancy – so if that underlying host were to fail, your VPS unfortunately would also go down with it. This is an important consideration, because the whole point of moving up is to gain reliability, not to trade one set of risks for another!
However, this is where our own approach to this differs. All of our VPS plans hosted on our mCloud platform are built on High Availability (HA) infrastructure – which is the practice of keeping systems online even in the face of disruptions. HA is usually achieved by having redundant hardware ready to automatically take over when something goes wrong. What this means in practice is that your VPS is protected against single-host downtime issues - so if a physical host were to experience a problem, your server is able to be brought back up on healthy hardware, rather than simply going offline and staying there until the fault is resolved. This kind of resilience used to only be reserved for far larger and more expensive setups, however it’s now available at our VPS level for organisations of all sizes to access.
Something else that changes when you move to a VPS is where the responsibility for managing the service sits. Unlike Shared Web Hosting (SWH) which is fully managed by default, VPS services are an opt-in when it comes to the management of the services. This means you have the option of choosing to manage the service yourself if you'd prefer to.
For those who like to be hands-on - this is a genuine benefit – as you get full administrator access and complete control over the configuration. But it's worth understanding what this management actually entails. It means taking full responsibility for the ongoing maintenance and updates of the operating system and software, applying security patches as they're released, keeping an eye on monitoring so you know when something needs attention, and generally looking after the health of the server over time. For some, this level of control is exactly what they want and perfect for what they're after. For others, however, this heavy lifting and added responsibility is way much more than they can handle or like to take on.
For those customers who would still prefer a fully managed service to provide that same peace of mind they've enjoyed having with Shared Web Hosting (SWH), this can still be achieved and provided for them when transitioning to our VPS services. The cost of doing so isn't insignificant, starting at $770.00 per month (ex-GST) for a fully maintained and monitored service. But in return, you get the reassurance that we're proactively managing the service on your behalf, keeping it updated, monitored, and looked after - so you don't have to think or worry about that aspect of running the business.
So how do you decide between the two? As with most things in IT, there's no single right answer – it comes down to weighing up a handful of factors against your own particular situation.
Price is an obvious one, as Shared Web Hosting (SWH) will always be the more economical option. But it's rarely the only consideration. There's also performance, and whether the resources available on a shared platform are still enough for what you're running. There's the noisy neighbour problem, and how much the isolation of a VPS is worth to you. There's the software you require, and whether it's something a shared environment is even able to support. There's compliance with the various laws and regulations that might apply to your industry – for example, the handling of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) such as medical data often comes with requirements that a shared platform isn't well-suited to meeting. And finally, there's the level of access you require to the service, and how much control you'd like over its configuration.
All of these should be weighed up together to determine what the best option is for your circumstances. And for many, Shared Web Hosting continues to be the perfect fit. For others, however, the move to a VPS is what unlocks the next stage of their growth.
